Mozilla Goes on the Attack Against Debilitating Firefox Add-ons

Mozilla Firefox 4 logo PCMag.Com - Just how many add-ons does it take to double Firefox's startup time? Ten, on average, claims a new blog post by Mozilla product manager Justin Scott.

The delay can be a tough pill to swallow, as add-ons—or extensions—have been one of the defining characteristics of the browser since its inception. One could say it was this unique, customizable characteristic that allowed Firefox to start pulling market share from longtime leader Internet Explorer. And the latest statistics from StatCounter indicate that Firefox now commands a market share of roughly 30 percent to IE's 45 percent.

Getting back to these add-ons, Scott says that each add-on that a person mashes into the Firefox web browser adds an average of 10 percent to the browser's start-up time. He prefaces this remark by noting that some add-ons consume minimal startup resources, and the delay is predicated on the exact hardware and software one's using when running Firefox. However, a number of add-ons eat up the browser's start-up time well beyond the 10 percent mark, and it's a widespread problem that Mozilla will now be actively targeting.     Read More
