Amazon Fire TV vs. Chromecast vs. Roku vs. Apple TV


Amazon just launched its new Fire TV. Here's how it compares to the other three biggest streaming device platforms in terms of features, apps, form factor, remotes, and pricing.

Amazon launched the Fire TV streaming media box.
Its standout features include an extensive library of games, an optional game controller ($40), voice search via a mic on the remote, an "ASAP" function that's said to launch certain videos immediately, and a "Free Time" function that allows parents to limit their kids' media consumption, much like on Amazon's Kindle Fire tablets.
It also offers a lot of content options.

How the next Xbox can win the cable TV war

If the next Xbox is a home-TV-integrated beast, HDMI-in may not be pretty...but it's probably the best short-term way to get to the future.


CNET - The battle for the future of television is just beginning, but it looks to be a long one. One of the key players is Microsoft, which has spent the past several years morphing its Xbox 360 from a straight-up gaming console into one of the best video-streaming boxes you can buy.

Of course, the current Xbox 360 is getting long in the tooth, and the next-generation model is expected to be announced soon, and to be available as early as the end of 2013. And TV services look to be just as central to the core of that device as gaming.

Last week, The Verge reported that Microsoft plans to enable live TV access on the upcoming console:
The functionality will work by taking a cable box signal and passing it through to the Xbox via HDMI, allowing Microsoft's console to overlay a UI [user interface] and features on top of an existing TV channel or set-top box.
That story would seem to confirm earlier rumors that the next Xbox would have support for live TV input, among other upgraded entertainment options, including Blu-ray.

So, the "Xbox 720" is taking a page from Google TV. But is that wise? Gigaom's Janko Roettgers asks, "Really, Microsoft? Your vision for the future of TV is...an HDMI cable?" He makes some solid points, ending his argument with "HDMI pass-through is the ultimate admission of defeat."

Redbox Instant to take on Netflix, but won't include TV shows

 

PCWorld - Although Redbox Instant has been billed as a rival to Netflix, it'll be a much different kind of streaming video service, according to new details.

Redbox Instant by Verizon, as it's officially called, will be “targeted squarely at movie lovers,” Shawn Strickland, the chief executive of the service, told the Associated Press. It'll have about 5,500 streaming movies at launch, but no TV shows.

That's a big difference compared to Netflix and Amazon Prime Instant Videos, which both rely heavily on TV shows to fill out their catalogs. For TV junkies who use those services to binge on serial dramas like “Mad Men” and “Breaking Bad,” Redbox Instant's focus on movies may be a deal-breaker.

Verizon and Redbox parent company Coinstar hope to make up for it by offering more popular movies, with content coming from Warner Bros., Epix, MGM and Lionsgate. For instance, Redbox Instant will offer “The Hunger Games,” a film that hit theaters last March, for instant streaming.

Redbox, Verizon Team on Streaming Service




PCWorld - Redbox and Verizon are working on a streaming video service to take on Netflix, but so far have said little about how it will work.

The joint venture will launch in the second half of 2012. According to a press release, it will offer “subscription services and more in an easy-to-use, flexible and affordable service that will allow all consumers across the U.S. to enjoy the new and popular entertainment they want, whenever they choose, using the media and devices they prefer.”

Redbox’s parent company, Coinstar, has been toying with the idea of a streaming video service for at least a couple years. In 2010, the company began gauging customer interest with surveys, and a year ago Redbox confirmed that it was working on something. (At the time, a partnership with Amazon was rumored, but Amazon has since launched its own streaming video service without Redbox.)            More

Streaming video with the power of LEDs

The same diode light that powered the wrist-calculator in 1980s classrooms is growing into something much more formidable. A Berlin research team is using the technology to stream HD video across a room. Michael Dumiak paid a visit.
Light-emitting diodes, or LEDs as they are commonly known, are small semiconductors that generate light when an electronic current is sent through a junction onboard the device.

Scientists have managed to make them more and more powerful in the past few months.

Researchers at the Heinrich Hertz Institute, part of the Munich-based Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, have now managed to set up an array of LEDs in a panel that can light up a 10-square-metre room and transmit wireless data to laptops. It is, in essence, a kind of optical alternative to WIFI.

This optical networking works by modulating the LED panel very rapidly – turning it on and off faster than the human eye can see – which encodes data into a digital stream of ones and zeros. “We want to make clear that you can use off-the-shelf, normal white-light LED chips for data transmission,” says Anagnostis Paraskevopoulos, an intra-machine communication expert who has been working on the network.

Working with Siemens and the French Telecom Orange Lab, the team were able to stream lossless data at 100 megabits per second at a maximum range of ten metres.

Paraskevopoulos explains the idea is not to try to replace the standard microwave and radio WIFI routers found in your house or in more generous airports and hotels.

Instead, it would offer an alternative when such networks aren’t desired, as in a hospital, or don’t work. It may also be possible to create combinations and so-called mesh networks which extend the range and power of the light transmissions.             More

What you need:
  • An Apple TV. At $99, this is the most inexpensive way to use AirPlay. Other options include AirPlay-enabled speakers, Apple AirPort, and some receivers.
  • An iOS device running iOS 4.2 or above. To check your software, go to Settings > About on your device and look at the number next to Version.
  • A solid wireless network. This is important, as media from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch will be streamed to your TV over your home network. Ensure that you’ve optimized your wireless network before streaming content.
