Car Tech: Intelligent Headlights Make Raindrops Disappear


PopSci - Anyone who's ever driven through a heavy rain has hoped for something like this: a system that can make rain drops vanish--or at least look like they do.

Intel and Carnegie Mellon University have developed technology that makes it happen, CNET reports. Each headlight projects not just a single beam, but a grid of several tiny beams (that's how the different-colored pixels are projected on the screen when there's actually an image being shown).

Intel Wants to Put a Supercomputer in Your Pocket

Wired - Five years from, says Intel, your phone could double as a supercomputer.

That’s the goal of Intel’s experimental Single-chip Cloud Computer project, or SCC. The company is now researching potential mobile applications for the chip, as well as developing tools that will make it easier for developers to take advantage of this technology without becoming supercomputing experts.

In other words, as ARM seeks to put cellphone chips into our supercomputers, Intel is doing the reverse. The lines between the mobile hardware and data-center hardware are blurring. That may seem odd at first, but if you step back and look at the bigger picture, it only makes sense. Big-time data-center operations want the ulta-low-power profiles of the hardware in our cellphones, and the mobile world is hungry for the computational punch you get from much larger systems.

Intel Labs technology evangelist Sean Koehl says that its 48-core creation, first discussed in 2009, acts as a “network” of processors on a single chip, with two cores per node. The nodes actually communicate to each other much the same way nodes in a cluster in a data center would. “We thought there may be some advantages to having an architecture within a chip that resembles the architecture around it,” he explains.

Intel Labs has been working on many-core chips since around 2004, and the more immediate applications will probably be in servers and, yes, supercomputers, which are essentially a bunch of servers working in tandem. This is often called high-performance computing, or HPC.

Whether you’re dealing with a high-end supercomputer, a cluster of commodity servers running Hadoop, or a cluster built out of Legos and ultra-cheap Raspberry Pi computers, HPC depends on parallel processing — breaking down big problems into smaller problems that are solved by different processors running in parallel. What Intel Labs is now researching is whether this approach will make sense for mobile computing.

Asus Essentio with Intel’s new CPU




The good: The Asus Essentio CM6870 is a reasonably well-equipped mainstream PC that is one of the first to feature Intel’s new third-generation (aka Ivy Bridge) Core i7 CPUs.

The bad: This boring commodity desktop has little to recommend it over similar systems, and Asus also focused too much on pleasing everyone with the configuration.

The bottom line: Intel’s new CPUs are the most compelling feature in this new Asus Essentio CM6870 desktop. Otherwise, it’s just another midtower.

Intel is arguably the most efficient, most advanced manufacturer in the world and one of the most sophisticated companies when it comes to bringing cutting-edge technology to the mass market.

It just isn’t very good at branching out.

The Santa Clara-based chipmakers inability to move into new markets has come up again amid rumors that it is working on services to provide TV programs over the Internet.

“The chip maker envisions the service as a bundle of television channels akin to the packages provided by cable and satellite television providers, according to a person with knowledge of the discussions, who did not want to be identified talking about unannounced company plans.

Instead of using the service via a set-top box, consumers would tune in with devices that run on Intel chips,” wrote the New York Times.                     More

Intel’s new 6-core CPUs: Good for gamers?






The good: This latest Falcon Northwest Mach V features Intel’s new six-core CPU, a new motherboard chipset, and the usual assortment of high-end components.

The bad: Gamers won’t see much benefit from Intel’s new chip compared with the old flagship Core i7, and the imposing Mach V case isn’t for everyone.

The bottom line: Well-heeled gamers with professional-level application performance needs should look into this statement-making Falcon Northwest Mach V, but you can spend far less and still enjoy top-notch gaming with an older CPU.

This Insanely Fast Gear Is Why Thunderbolt’s Gonna Matter Real Soon


Gizmodo - The Thunderbolt I/O interface is the darling of Apple and Intel. Introduced on the MacBook Pro line in late February, the port is still largely collecting dust.

The peripherals just haven’t materialized as quickly as many had expected, and unless you want to drop $1000 on an Apple Cinema Display, even getting something as simple as a hub is an exercise in futility.
