CNET - In anticipation for Samsung's next flagship handset, the rumor mill has been churning out one speculation after another about the Galaxy S4. CNET gathers the latest (and craziest) rumors about the device.

Considering the popularity and success of the Samsung Galaxy S3, it's understandable that whispers of its successor (presumably called the Galaxy S4) are circulating. From iffy launch dates to spec upgrades, CNET tracks all the talk and rounds up the latest GS4 rumors here.

March 15 presser in the works
Doubling down with its April sale date prediction, SamMobile is reporting that Samsung will hold a March 15 press event to unveil the handset. Citing a "trusted insider," the site said it should expect a presser invitation after MWC finishes. Here's hoping -- because there's nothing sadder than waiting for an invite to the coolest party of the year and staring down an empty mailbox instead.

Scratch that September rumor; you won't see it at MWC after all
According to a source who spoke to CNET, it looks like the Galaxy S4 will be absent at Mobile World Congress this year. Instead, the company will probably put on its own event just for the device, similar to what it did last year with the S3 in May.

CNET - On any given day of the week, the rumor mill churns out leaked specs, blurred images, and other tidbits that give us a clue about unannounced Android tablets and smartphones. In a new weekly column, I'll track the best ones, be they credible or outlandish.

Before going any further, remember that none of these rumors has been officially confirmed.

Benchmarks, while often a good source for discovering new devices, can be faked. What's more, a trusted source doesn't always have the right intel to pass along. Also worth noting is that the time frames for the respective products can slip and that "coming weeks" may actually mean months.

In other words, you'll need to take these rumors with a grain or two of salt. In fact, you might want to keep that salt shaker nearby.

Word broke earlier this week that the smartphone maker is hoping to move 4 to 5 million units of a new device in Q1 2013. Dubbed the M7, details reportedly include an aluminum uni-body, 13-megapixel camera, and quad-core Qualcomm processor. Oh, and let's not forget the five-inch 1080p HD display.

LG could release a follow-up to the Optimus G, but it's improbable that they'd announce something as soon as CES. Mobile World Congress, which takes place in late February, seems like a more likely time. As to what handset could make for the successor, the E940 could be a likely candidate.

CNET tracks all the iPhone 5 rumors -- from the likely to the crazy -- that we've heard so far in 2011 and 2012.

After unveiling a marginally improved iPhone 4S in 2011 instead of a radically different iPhone 5, Apple has returned to its development labs to cook up (no pun intended) the next iteration of its popular phone. In 2012, we're fairly certain that the real iPhone 5 will roll out of Apple's gates and that the device should be a bigger leap forward than the 4S was.

It'll have a thinner screen
The Wall Street Journal reports that the new iPhone's display will incorporate "in-cell technology." Already manufactured by LCD screen makers including Sharp, LG Display, and Japan Display, in-cell technology enables a screen's touch sensors and LCD be consolidated into one single layer. This would result in a thinner screen and a cheaper production price.

A stockpile of SIMs
The Financial Times reports that wireless carriers in Europe are stockpiling nano-SIM chips in anticipation of Apple including the new technology in the next iteration of the iPhone. Smaller than regular SIM cards, they could allow Apple to include a bigger battery in its next handset. The company started using nano-SIMs in 2010 in the first iPad.

Photos of purported iPhone 5 leak onto the Web

A host of new photos have emerged from two sources who claim the devices in the pictures are actually Apple's next-generation iPhone. 9to5Mac posts photos that look like the back plate of a new iPhone model allegedly from a Chinese supplier. Similarly MacRumors published an additional set from repair firm uBreakiFix with the same part.

iPhone 5 likely to launch by Sept. or Oct., says another analyst
RBC analyst Amit Daryanani says Apple's next iPhone is coming in September or October, similar to the time last year when Apple rolled out the iPhone 4S. Daryanani added that the device will sport 4G/LTE technology and be fully redesigned.       More

iPad 3 rumor roundup

CNET - With the success Apple is enjoying with the iPad 2, we’re not sure it even needs to make an iPad 3.

It will, of course. Just as it’s done over the past two years, Apple will likely unveil its latest, greatest tablet around April 2012. Until then, it’s open season on iPad 3 rumors.

A purported photo of the iPad 3′s display is published by MacRumors. A microscopic inspection shows it to have more pixels than the current model, while maintaining the iPad’s same 4:3 aspect ratio and 9.7-inch screen size.

Supplier chatter points to smaller 8-inch iPad
The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is talking to component suppliers about an iPad with a smaller screen. This rumor matches up with a previous rumor that Apple may create three tiers of iPads, including a smaller model offered at an entry-level price.

Verizon and AT&T to back iPad 3 4G capability
The two telecom carriers will carry a next-generation iPad running on the fast, next-generation wireless technology, sources tell The Wall Street Journal. Both carriers currently offer versions of the iPad 2 that make use of their respective 3G networks.

A source quoted by the New York Times claims that the next generation of the iPad will be announced in early March 2012, and will look very similar to the iPad 2. The article goes on to speculate that the new iPad may not be called “iPad 3,” considering how Apple’s modestly updated iPhone 4S was thought to be called the iPhone 5.
