The Samsung Galaxy S3 was arguably the biggest Android phone release to date, so it's hardly surprising that the inevitable S4 is leading the pack as one of the most anticipated phones of 2013. While details on the device remain strictly in rumor mill territory, the best guesses include a 5-inch 1080p HD display, a 13-megapixel camera, and integrated support for Visa wireless payments. But one thing we know for sure: we'll be getting all of the relevant details on March 14 at Manhattan's Radio City Music Hall.

Google's Simulated Human Brain Has Trained Itself to Recognize Cats on YouTube

PopSci - As intelligent as computers continue to get, it's still a lot of work for them to perform tasks many humans do on a regular basis--like, say, enjoying cat videos on YouTube. In an attempt to bridge that gap, scientists from Google's X laboratory created a simulated human brain by putting 16,000 computer processors together and having them browse around the Internet, learning facts about the world as they went. And the simulated human brain successfully found YouTube's cats.    More

Interactive Designs That You Can Wear (Sooner or Later)

 

PCWorld - Today, you’re inseparable from your tech. Soon, you’ll be wearing it. We looked across the Internet at what clever designing minds are doing with interactive wearables.

Some of these products are for sale now, while other items are coming soon (according to their creators). And some of these things are great concept designs that live exclusively with their inventors for the moment. Here are some pieces of interactive apparel that we’d love to try out (or on).
Let’s start with a cool jacket intended to protect cyclists.



 

Sporty Supaheroe Jacket for Night Bicycling (Concept)

 

All too often, cyclists are in danger of being run over, especially after dark. Someday, this unusual piece of wearable technology may be able to help.

The Utope Project, a cooperation between designer Wolfgang Langeder and Stretchable Circuits/Fraunhofer IZM, created the Sporty Supaheroe concept jacket, which has a flexible display of up to 64 RGB-LEDs placed in segments on the front, back, and shoulder areas.

The jacket’s lights can generate multiple colors and patterns. On top of that, the garment offers a visual link with a smartphone placed in the jacket’s pocket, and the wearer can tell whether a call is coming in by the way certain lights activate.

The “Beauty and the Geek” concept design by Nieuwe Heren integrates a keyboard into a pair of jeans. Note that the mouse is attached, and should reside in your pocket when not in use.
This idea might be carrying the marriage of life and tech a little too far.

When you’re wearing the Click Keypad Watch ($90), just touch a key, and the time will blink in single digits. You can set the watch on the 12-hour system or the 24-hour system. On the latter, if the time is, say, 1:12 p.m., the one, three, one, and two will blink in that order. If you want to know the date, press the pound key.

Patching Up Human Brain With Electronics - Israeli Researchers Build a Rat Cyborg With a Digital Cerebellum

PopSci - The day when doctors can patch up the human brain with electronics, cyborg-style, hasn’t dawned just yet. But if the rats at Tel Aviv University are any indication, that day may not be so very far away. Researchers there have developed a synthetic cerebellum that has restored lost brain function in rats, demonstrating that artificial brain analogs can potentially replace parts of the brain that aren’t functioning properly. The team’s synthetic cerebellum is more or less a simple microchip, but can receive sensory input from the brainstem, interpret that nerve input, and send the appropriate signal to a different region of the brainstem to initiate the appropriate movement. Right now it is only capable of dealing with the most basic stimuli/response sequence, but the very fact that researchers can do such a thing marks a pretty remarkable leap forward.

To achieve such a breakthrough, the cerebellum was a pretty ideal place to start. Its architecture is simple enough and one of its functions is to orchestrate motor movements in response to stimuli, making it easy enough to test. Using what they already knew about the way a rat’s cerebellum interacts with its brainstem to generate motion, they built a chip that mimicked that kind of neural processing and activity.                 More
