NASA Military Helicopter Crash Tests Improve Survivability and Durability

industry tap - One of the most spectacular, harrowing and deadly human events is the crash of a helicopter. One moment, it’s flying smoothly through the air and the next pirouetting toward the ground, sometimes sailing back and forth out of control, its pilot struggling to right it, until it hits a power line or the ground. As a helicopter crashes, its rotors continue spinning until they are ripped apart at impact, flying off in all directions.

Once the crash has occurred, the next big event is usually an explosion of onboard fuel that occurs just after impact. If occupants have not been injured or killed in the crash, their lives are now threatened by a large tank of extremely flammable fuel, usually located just under the cockpit.
While any loss of life is tragic and to be avoided, the loss of highly trained military personnel can be extremely damaging to a military unit.      Read More

Raccoons Get Trapped in Garbage Bin

Nat Geo - Oct. 15, 2014 - Watch two raccoons get trapped in a garbage bin trying to grab some goodies. National Geographic grantee Suzanne MacDonald created experiments to observe the problem-solving skills of urban-dwelling raccoons. One setup involved hiding food inside a garbage bin and securing its lid with a bungee cord. When a group of raccoons tries to access the food, two get trapped inside.

CNET - US carriers begin announcing on- and off-contract pricing for Samsung's next flagship smartphone, as well as for Samsung's Gear family of wearables.

AT&T and US Cellular are the first US carriers to announce pricing and availability for the Samsung Galaxy S5, which globally goes on sale April 11 for $200 with a two-year contract.

If you're not into traditional contracts, AT&T's various pricing options also make room to buy the Galaxy S5 off contract for $650, or as part of its AT&T Next 18 and Next 12 programs, where you'll pay down $25 per month and $32.50 a month, respectively.   Read More
