Hands-on: Apple updates iMac with gorgeous new display

CNET - Apple announced a new iMac desktop this morning, the first update to its all-in-one line since May 2011. The new model brings Intel's third-generation Core CPUs (aka Ivy Bridge) to the iMac, as well as a gorgeous new thin display.

The new display is 5mm thick, making it the thinnest display on any all-in-one. The resolutions remain the same as on the previous generation of iMac desktops, 2,560x1,440 pixels on the 27-inch model, and 1,920x1,080 pixels for the 21.5-inch version.

Apple updates 13-inch MacBook Pro, adding Retina Display, for $1,699

CNET - Apple has announced a 13-inch version of the MacBook Pro with Retina Display, which joins the 15-inch version introduced in June. The new 13-inch MacBook is thinner, measuring 0.75 inch, and lighter than previous models at 3.57 pounds, with a much higher screen resolution.

The 15-inch Retina MacBook Pro immediately became the high-end flagship of Apple's laptop line. This left the current 13-inch Pro a bit of an odd man out, with mainstream consumers flocking to the MacBook Air, and power users better served by the Retina and non-Retina 15-inch Pro. It was getting hard to figure out exactly who the 13-inch MacBook Pro was aimed at, besides users who still needed an optical drive in a 13-inch OS X laptop.

Garmin Updates iPhone Navigation Apps with Public Transportation
Features and Apple Maps Integration

Just shortly after the release of iOS 6, Garmin today updated its
iPhone navigation apps[1] to add public transportation features, Apple
Maps integration and full support for the new 4-inch screen of the
iPhone 5.

"With our recent updates our apps can now serve as an extension to
Apple Maps, providing iPhone users advanced navigation capabilities,"
said Joern Watzke, vice president mobile phone business at Garmin
Wuerzburg GmbH. "This includes our new public transportation
functionality as well as many additional premium features that aren't
available on free navigation apps."

Garmin app users can simply select any address or point of interest in
Apple Maps and they will be offered the option to navigate to the
selected destination using either their StreetPilot Onboard or their
NAVIGON app[2]. The Garmin iPhone apps feature onboard maps that allow
route calculations even in areas where cell coverage fades. Additional
premium features include comprehensive lane guidance, speed limit and
safety camera warnings, exit services, parking info, a trip planner
and multi-route display, among many other functions.

The Garmin StreetPilot Onboard and the NAVIGON apps now fully utilize
the 4-inch display of the iPhone 5, which makes it easier to see all
the details in the map view, such as speed limits or points of
interest. This comes in especially handy for split screen depictions
such as when the lane guidance feature is displayed next to the map
view.

New Pedestrian and Public Transportation Features

With Urban Guidance users are able to integrate public transportation
into their route, complete with detailed itineraries of transit stops.
The new feature considers trains, trams, busses and water taxis when
calculating pedestrian routes. Users will be guided to a transit stop
by foot and be able to look up detailed information on what line to
take and where to get off. The new Last Mile function automatically
saves the location of the user's car when continuing by foot, making
it easy to find it on the way back. To depict the user's surroundings,
the Garmin StreetPilot Onboard app for iPhone will now also include
new graphical features such as Google Street View and Panorama View 3D

Google updates PageSpeed Service so you don't waste precious seconds waiting for pages to load

Engadget - Last year, Google launched its PageSpeed Service, aiming to improve our experience across the web while reportedly deferring its own financial interests. The concept was sound -- similar services like Akamai work to accelerate web browsing by caching pages in much the same way -- but there's always room for improvement.
